Police: Man offered free tattoo for sex with underage girl

A southeastern Pennsylvania man accused of trading a tattoo for sex with an underage girl now faces sex charges involving more than a dozen other children as young as 4 years old, most of them the children of friends and girlfriends. Walter Meyerle, 34, of Falls, faces nearly 200 sex crime counts on allegations that he sexually assaulted two adults and 14 children, according to Bucks County prosecutors. The assaults took place over the past 13 years and involved children ranging in age from 4 to 17 years old. Meyerle was arrested in March for allegedly giving a teen girl a tattoo in return for sexual favors. After that arrest, authorities said, additional victims began to come forward after seeing and hearing publicity about the case. That prompted police and prosecutors to undertake a massive investigation involving many interviews. Meyerle was arraigned Friday on charges including aggravated indecent assault, statutory sexual assault and corruption of minors and was being held on $5 million bail. Dressed in a yellow prison jumpsuit, he said little during the hearing. The judge told him not to contact any of the victims from jail and asked the same of Meyerle's wife, who authorities said is under investigation as well.

Bin Laden was logged off, but not al-Qaida

Osama bin Laden cut himself off from direct access to the Internet during his final years in Pakistan as he attempted to elude the CIA. But the terror group he founded has been able to seize the power of the Web to spawn an army of online followers who will prolong al-Qaida's war against the West long after his demise. Al-Qaida's technological evolution illustrates how much the group has changed since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and why it has flourished despite America's decade-long quest to crush it, using everything from drone strikes in Pakistan to secret prisons in Eastern Europe where bin Laden's lieutenants were interrogated. The U.S. scored its biggest victory in that war on May 2, when U.S. Navy SEALs shot and killed the 54-year-old terror leader during a daring late-night helicopter raid not far from Pakistan's capital.
His death was undoubtedly a blow to al-Qaida, but the group's diffuse, virtual network lives on in militant chatrooms and on social media sites like Facebook and YouTube, where supporters carry forward bin Laden's message and plan the kind of bloody attacks that were his hallmark."While bin Laden's death has certainly been lamented within the jihadist community, al-Qaida's copious media over the past 10 years have ensured that bin Laden's videos, speeches, and ideas will continue to incite jihadists all over the world," said Rita Katz, head of the U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group that monitors Islamic militant messages online.
Unlike its Afghan Taliban allies, who banned television when they were in power, al-Qaida has never rejected modern technology and recognized the importance of an online presence before Sept. 11. But its early efforts were fairly rudimentary. Since then, the group and its affiliates have exploited the Internet to rally and connect supporters, and are very quick to adopt new technology.

Syrian Facebook users hit by online attacks

Facebook users in Syria are being targeted by online attacks, presumably launched by the Syrian government, aimed at monitoring and intercepting their social networking communications. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) warned Syrian Facebook users Thursday that the attacks are using forged, invalid security certificates and occurring on the secure, HTTPS-encrypted Facebook site. In these "man-in-the-middle" attacks, the perpetrators use a fake security certificate to trick users into logging on to what they believe to be a securely encrypted Facebook page. Once the users access the site, their communications can be monitored and censored. In these particular instances in Syria, the invalid security certificate used by the attackers causes a warning to pop up on users' Web browsers, but "because users see these warnings for many operational reasons that are not man-in-the-middle attacks, they have often learned to click through them reflexively." The EFF is urging Syrian Facebook users to use proxy connections to access Facebook, or to login via Tor, software that allows for anonymous Internet connections and freedom from surveillance. Unfortunately, this is by no means the first time an oppressive government — Egypt, Libya, Bahrain — has attempted to keep a citizen rebellion at bay by targeting the people's social networking freedoms.

Teen fights mom over Starbucks coffee

Brandon Scott Quintana, 19, was taken to jail after he allegedly got physical with his mom because she drank his Starbucks iced coffee. The Port St. Lucie resident is charged with battery for the incident earlier in the week, just days before Mother's Day. Starbucks is delicious, but not "so good, it will make you wanna slap yo mama" delicious. That didn't stop Quintana from crying over spilled coffee. The spat started when Quintana's 43-year-old mom woke up from a nap with a parched throat. She saw her son's Starbucks in the refrigerator and probably thought it was safe to drink. When Quintana got home, he was looking for his chilled treat. When he couldn't find it, he threw a temper tantrum, police said. Quintana allegedly told police he was "pissed off because he spent every cent on that coffee" and that what his mom did amounted to stealing. Cops didn't quite see it that way. Quintana's mom said she tried to solve the problem with her son by offering a 2-liter soda as a replacement for the Starbucks, but he pushed her into a computer chair.

What was in medicine chests at bin Laden compound?

Either Osama bin Laden or those who lived with him at the Pakistan compound where he was killed apparently suffered from stomach ulcers, high blood pressure and nerve pain — plus the normal ailments that affect a family with children, according to a pharmacist’s analysis of medications reportedly found at the site. A list obtained by NBC News from Pakistani sources of nearly a dozen drugs found in the aftermath of the U.S. killing of the 9/11 terror mastermind on Sunday in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The medications provide some insight into ailments of the people living at the compound, but show no evidence of serious health conditions, such as the kidney failure rumored to afflict bin Laden.  The listed medications included drugs to ease the symptoms of stomach problems, such as ulcers and gastric reflux. and scrapes. The discovery of Avena syrup raises questions about whether bin Laden or anyone at the compound was hoping to boost sexual desire and performance. Avena Sativa is an extract of wild oats, a dietary supplement marketed as an aphrodisiac known by the nicknames “natural Viagra” and “wild oats,”.

5 charged in Mass. bullying case strike deals

i picked this article because i think that bullying should be stopped. You can bully a person in so many ways but it should be stopped. Theres consquences to bullying, nobody should have to go through that. Its not only bad for the person but the for the persons parents or loved ones. Five teenagers have agreed to plead guilty to a minor charge in the bullying of a 15-year-old Massachusetts girl who later committed suicide.  The teens are charged in the bullying of Phoebe Prince, an Irish immigrant who hanged herself in her family's South Hadley apartment last year after what a prosecutor called a "relentless" campaign of bullying that included yelling "Irish whore" at her in the school library, posting demeaning comments about her on Facebook and threatening to beat her up. Prince's death drew international attention and was among several high-profile teen suicides that lead to new laws aimed at cracking down on bullying in schools. The five teens are expected to plead guilty to criminal harassment, a misdemeanor. In exchange, prosecutors will drop more serious charges, including civil rights violations. The harassment charge carries a maximum of 2½ years in a county jail, but the teens could receive probation

Maine boy without hands honored for penmanship

A 10-year-old boy who earned a spot in a national penmanship contest despite being born without hands and lower arms is in a league of his own.
Nicholas Maxim, a fifth-grader at Readfield Elementary School who writes by holding a pencil between his arms, impressed judges at a national penmanship contest enough that they created a new category for students with disabilities. Maxim received the first Nicholas Maxim Special Award for Excellent Penmanship this week at a school assembly.
Judges who sifted through 200,000 handwriting entries in the annual contest run by Columbus, Ohio-based schoolbook publisher Zaner-Bloser said the new category would inspire others.
Maxim, who said he likes writing and illustrating comic strips, didn't know his paper had even been submitted to the contest, so Monday's school assembly in his honor came as a surprise.

Will teen multitasking give rise to ADD? Study may offer answer

I chose this article because its crazy how teens now a days are so concentrated on their phones and computers instead of their homework. Whether they’re texting while talking to friends or plugging in to an iPod while studying, today's teenagers seem to be constantly multitasking. Young people are spending at least seven-and-a-half hours a day with media computers, cell phones, TV or music -- and by frequently multitasking that means they're packing in the equivalent of nearly 11 hours hours of content, according to a 2010 study by the Kaiser Family Foundation. That's an increase from nearly six-and-half hours a day, or eight-and-a-half hours of media multitasking, just six years ago. Parents who grew up in a world without all the technological chatter often find themselves wondering whether their kids will ever learn to focus on one thing at a time. They ask: Are we raising an entire generation of children with attention deficit disorder?

Government Shutdown Would Threaten Time-Sensitive Science

When New York City lost power in 2003, security guards at Columbia University's medical center had to trawl the dimly lit halls to kick out all the lab workers. There's no snowstorm fierce enough or holiday sacred enough to keep a dedicated scientist away from work. And yet, if the government shuts down in the coming days, many publicly funded scientists will have to stay home stewing as their clinical research goes stale on the shelves. "It's very frustrating. Everyone is demoralized,". The agency has been very quiet about who gets to make these decisions, but has indicated to its staff that much of the work will simply have to stop. For clinical researchers, the interruptions could be devastating, potentially threatening patient participation.  Animal work and molecular biology are likely to fare even worse during a government shutdown. If they get the plug pulled on them, researchers at these labs will have no idea when they can return, forcing them to freeze what samples they can and throw out the rest. Most experiments that get interrupted will probably just have to be trashed and restarted. "If you lose a month, you lose a year's worth of data. It's really horrific," they said.

Naked man with AK-47 fires at SWAT robot

A Brevard County man blasted away with an assault rifle at a SWAT robot while wearing nothing but his birthday suit. The suspect's dog was the only onlooker as the robot approached the door at the West Melbourne home on Del Mar Circle. Authorities said a man with several guns was suicidal and threatening authorities. "He said he'd shoot anyone he could,".  Instead of risking any lives, deputies sent the $65,000 robot into the home. The robot has cameras, which record all of its actions. The video shows the robot searching each room, its electronic eye roving from side to side while officers watch safely from a command post. As the robot slowly pushes the man's bedroom door open, the man comes out, stark naked, with an AK-47 in hand. The man then starts shooting at the robot. The camera goes out at first, and then comes back on. The robot came away with bullet holes, frayed wires and broken cables, but no one was hurt. The man was charged with criminal mischief. The robot will be out of commission for a while. It's being sent back to its manufacturer for repairs.

Simple life in Manhattan: A 90-square-foot home

I chose this article because it seems crazy how she can live in such a small space and not mind. She loves her cozy little room and feels really comfortable.  The average size of the American home is shrinking -- it dropped in both 2008 and 2009 after 15 straight years of growth -- but most of us are still living larger than people in the Big Apple. Home size in Manhattan is about half the national average. One New Yorker has taken her love of frugal living to the extreme. Felice Cohen’s apartment measures just 90 square feet, but she doesn’t see it as a sacrifice. With such a small space, she pays just $700 to live in a part of town where rents average $3,600 per month. Her kitchen consists of a toaster oven, hot pot, and mini fridge, but she claims her backyard is larger than average: “I look out my window, and it’s New York City. Her first night she had a bit of a panic attack the first night in her apartment when she woke up in the loft bed with the ceiling 23 inches from her face, but she’s grown accustomed to the small space. Now when she goes back to her childhood home, she misses her apartment’s coziness: “I think a lot of people have a lot of space that they’re not using. I grew up in a place where my bedroom was 17 feet by 17 feet with two walk-in closets that combined were almost the size of this apartment ... when I go home now, I go in the closet just to feel like I’m back in New York.”

House Republicans Seek to Derail FCC's New Internet Rules

The House Republicans pushing along legislation that would block new Internet regulation ran smack into a wall this week when President Obama threatened to veto the measure if it made it to his desk. On Tuesday, the GOP led-house approved the terms of debate for the measure that would block the so-called "net neutrality" rules approved by the Federal Communications Commission on a party-line vote late last year. The Housed is expected to pass on the measure on Thursday, but it's highly unlikely the Democrat-led Senate will take the measure up and the White House has made its opposition clear.  The bill "would undermine a fundamental part of the nation's Internet and innovation strategy – an enforceable and effective policy for keeping the Internet free and open," the White House Office of Management and Budget said in a statement Monday. "Since the development of the Internet, federal policy has ensured that this medium is kept open and facilitates innovation and investment, protects consumer choice and enables free speech." "If the president is presented with a resolution of disapproval that would not safeguard the free and open Internet, his senior advisers would recommend that he veto the resolution,". The rules are intended to prohibit phone and cable companies from abusing their control over broadband connections to discriminate against rival content or services, or play favorites with Web traffic. But critics say it's a solution in search of a problem, and that the move could open the door for ever-expanding government dominion over the Internet.

Researchers Plan to Drill Deepest Ever Hole in the Earth

This is a very interesting article and it caught my attention. Is it really possible to get to the center of the earth. May sound crazy but it can be possible or o they in this article. It's no journey to the center of the Earth. Not yet, anyway. But scientists do intend to drill the deepest hole ever made in the Earth's crust, deep beneath the oceans off the coast of Costa Rica, an effort to collect samples of the planet's mantle for the first time ever, according to a report at National Geographic News. Samples pulled from deep within the planet -- extracted by a Japanese drill ship equipped with a whopping six miles of drilling pipe -- would rival moon rocks in terms of scientific importance, they claim.  Between Earth's molten core and hard, thin crust lies the roughly 2,0000-miles-thick mantle, which contains the vast bulk of Earth's rocks. But we don't know much about them, because all we have are bits that have come to the surface via volcanoes or those trapped in ancient mountain belts. And existing mantle samples no longer really represent mantle conditions and makeup, experts say, since they've been altered in the long process of coming to the surface, so they providing only tantalizing glimpses of what lies below. Even so, drilling into the mantle would be "very expensive" and would require new drillbit and lubricant designs, among other things, according to a paper published in the journal Nature. But if all goes as planned, drilling could begin by 2020

Indiana Prosecutor Suggested Fake Attack on Wisconsin Governor Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/03/25/indiana-prosecutor-suggested-fake-attack-wisconsin-governor/#ixzz1HxH4dxJ4

An Indiana prosecutor said one of his deputies resigned Thursday after admitting he sent an email to Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker suggesting the Republican fake an attack on himself to discredit the public employee unions protesting his plan to strip them of nearly all collective bargaining rights.  Cooper said Lam initially denied sending the email and said someone had hacked into his email account. But Lam later acknowledged he had written the message, and resigned hours before the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism reported the contents publicly Thursday.  Lam's email was sent amid daily protests at the Wisconsin Capitol against Walker's plan to take away public employees' rights to collectively bargain for anything except wages no higher than inflation.  "We cannot have the public unions hold the taxpayer hostage with their outrageous demands," said the email, which urged Walker to "stay strong." Lam is the second Indiana prosecutor to lose his job over volatile comments about the Wisconsin protests. Jeffrey Cox, a deputy attorney general, was fired last month after tweeting that police should use live ammunition against labor protesters. Wisconsin Republicans eventually used a procedural maneuver to pass the collective bargaining measure without Democrats who had fled to block a vote and Walker has signed it in to law. But a judge has issued a temporary restraining order to block the law from taking effect while courts consider a lawsuit alleging the Republicans' move violated the state's open meetings law and constitution.

Boy,10, arrested for driving off in parents SUV in a snit

I chose this article because i thought it was crazy and i didn't know 10 year old's could drive. A 10-year-old boy took his parents' SUV for a joyride that came to a crashing end. Zilan Fitch became angry after he was punished so he decided to take his mother's SUV. The Montgomery County boy's mother said she panicked when she looked out her window Wednesday at 9:10 a.m. and saw her son backing out of their driveway. "By the time I got down to the driveway, he's down the street,". She hopped into another vehicle and followed Zilan down Rayford Road. She said he was staying in his lane and even used his turn signals. She tired stopping him but he would floor it. She called police for help. Zilan would not stop driving on the busy street during rush hour. He even led deputies on a chase. He was hit from behind at a stop light but he still kept going. He finally stopped at a doughnut shop. No one was injured. He was charged with a felony  unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and  was taken to juvenile detention but was released to his family.

Tsunami: What Causes the Deadly Waves?

I chose this article because it was interesting and i wanted to know more about tsunamis. Tsunamis, which can travel over the ocean surface from many hundreds of miles, can be generated when chunks of the planet's crust separate under the seafloor, causing an earthquake. Here's what happens: One slab of lifting crust essentially rapidly acts as a giant paddle, transferring its energy to the water.Tsunamis can also be caused by volcanic eruptions, underwater detonations and even landslides. The resulting waves are hard to predict for several reasons. Nobody knows how a quake has affected the seafloor until hours, days or even months after the event. And a tsunami is almost  unexpected on the open ocean, which rises to full velocity only as it nears the shore.  Not all seafloor earthquakes will generate a tsunami — if the friction between the crustal plates occurs very deep below the ocean floor or move in a way that causes a minimal paddle effect, a tsunami isn't as likely to form.

Old people suffer abandonment, cold in wake of tsunami

In Japan's disaster, the elderly have borne the brunt of the calamity. This became more and more clear as shocking and heartbreaking stories emerged on Friday from a nation hit hard by disaster and despair.  "We feel very helpless and very sorry for them," said Chuei Inamura, a Fukushima government official. As retrieving bodies increasingly becomes the focus of rescue crews in Japan's northeast, it's clear that last Friday's quake and tsunami — believed to have killed 10,000 — took their heaviest toll on the elderly in this fast-aging nation, where nearly one person in four is over 65. Many, unable to flee fast enough, perished. Survivors have lost medicines. Hospitals have lost power and water. Sometimes, the consequences have been fatal.

Obama calls for Congress to pass education reforms

President Barack Obama called for Congress to pass education reforms by the time students return to school next fall. Mindful of the budget debate currently enveloping Washington, Obama insisted that education funding must remain robust because it is vital to the nation's future success. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act was originally passed in 1965 and requires periodic reauthorization. The current version of the law, which was passed on a bipartisan basis in 2002, requires states to set higher standards and to have greater accountability through standardized testing. The administration, which has been meeting with congressional leaders to hash out changes before any reauthorization vote, believes current law is too punitive and has led to a too-narrow curriculum and lower standards.

States Spend Almost Four Times More Per Capita on Incarcerating Prisoners Than Educating Students, Studies Say

I choose this article because were talking about education in class and it interesting. An examination of state budgets has revealed that most states, despite spending more money overall on education, are spending three to four times more per capita incarcerating prisoners than they are educating students. According to research gathered from the Department of Justice, Georgia lawmakers, for example, spend about $18,000 a year to house one inmate in a state prison and on education they spend about one-third to put a child in public education.

Is that a monkey in your bra, or ... oh, OK, it's a monkey

A woman turned a few heads when she walked into a rural Virginia courthouse with a tiny monkey clad in a pink-and-white dress tucked in her bra. The woman brought the palm-sized marmoset to Amherst County Courthouse on Thursday for a hearing in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Officials apparently didn't notice the monkey until the woman went to an office to complete some paperwork.

Japan's quake toll set to exceed 1,000

A devastating tsunami triggered by the biggest earthquake on record in Japan looked set to kill at least 1,000 people along the northeastern coast on Friday after a wall of water swept away everything in its path. The unfolding disaster in the wake of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and 10-meter (33-feet) high tsunami prompted offers of search and rescue help from 45 countries. Stunning TV footage showed a muddy torrent of water carrying cars and wrecked homes at high speed across farmland near the coastal city of Sendai, home to one million people and which lies 300 km (180 miles) northeast of Tokyo. Ships had been flung onto a harbor wharf, where they lay helplessly on their side. Boats, cars and trucks were tossed around like toys in the water after a small tsunami hit the town of Kamaichi in northern Japan. Kyodo news agency reported that contact had been lost with four trains in the coastal area.Daylight, just an hour away, looked set to reveal further death and devastation, especially after two strong aftershocks that struck during the night in the northwest of Japan's main island. Japanese politicians pushed for an emergency budget to fund relief efforts after Kan asked them to "save the country," Kyodo news agency reported. Japan is already the most heavily indebted major economy in the world, meaning any funding efforts would be closely scrutinized by financial markets.

German radio runs controversial funeral contest

A German local radio station is offering a competition prize much closer to home than an exotic holiday or tickets for a celebrity concert. How about a cheque to cover your own funeral? That is what the lucky winner will get in Radio Galaxy's competition in Aschaffenburg, north Bavaria. More than 600 contestants have sent in their own epitaph for their headstone. One of the radio's presenters, Jens Pflueger, defended the competition, saying it was aimed at breaking society's "taboo" about death and getting young people to talk about it. The prize is 3,000 euros (£2,578; $4,195) which has to be spent on death insurance - money that will cover funeral expenses. "We want people to send in their own epitaphs. If they send someone else's quote that's OK, but for me that's not creative enough," he told the BBC.

Ohio school sorry for making black student 'slave'

The mother of a black Ohio fifth grader assigned to play a slave for a social studies lesson says the school should be more sensitive. Ten-year-old Nikko says the class was randomly divided into "masters" and "slaves" and that the only other black student got to be a master. Burton says her son refused to take part in a simulated slave auction and was sent back to his desk. Burton says she appreciates the apology, but the exercise was inappropriate. The school district said in a statement Thursday that officials acted promptly once the concern was raised.

Venezuela says Libya OKs Chavez mediation plan

Moammar Gadhafi's government has authorized Venezuela to select countries for an effort to mediate an end to Libya's crisis and to coordinate the effort, Venezuela's foreign minister said Fridy. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who calls Gadhafi a friend and ally, has proposed creating a group of "friendly countries" to help mediate in the conflict. Gadhafi's opponents in Libya, however, have shown no willingness to negotiate as long as he remains in power. Countries including the U.S. and Italy also have been cool to Chavez's proposal. The idea won support Friday from the foreign ministers of Cuba, Ecuador and Bolivia as well as from other officials representing Nicaragua, Dominica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. They joined Maduro in Caracas for a meeting of nations belonging to the Venezuela-led Bolivarian Alternative bloc, or ALBA.   Support for the mediation proposal by Cuba, Nicaragua, Ecuador and Bolivia shows "how important the ALBA is for this world of today, which before the silence of the world has been left as the voice," Chavez said. He said time is of the essence in creating a "working group of coordination with other countries."  Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez praised Chavez's proposal and called on supporters to work on building "an international movement ... against a NATO military intervention in Libya and in Arab countries."

'Baby Gaga' breast milk ice cream removed from shop

Local government officials have confiscated ice cream made with human breast milk from a London shop amid concerns the dessert is unsafe. A spokeswoman from Westminster City Council said Monday it was responding to two complaints from the public over whether a shop should be selling edibles made from other people's bodily fluids and awaiting guidance from Britain's Food Standards Agency. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with council policy. The official said the ice cream, marketed as "Baby Gaga" and launched last week, is being tested with the full cooperation of The Icecreamists, the parlor marketing the dessert.
Viruses, including hepatitis, can be passed on through breast milk.

Thin Mint thrashing lands Florida woman behind bars

The Collier County woman was arrested Sunday after a savage beatdown of her roommate over a box of the delicious Girl Scout cookies that were apparently off limits to her kids. The roommate told Howard she'd given the cookies to Howard's kids, who were awake and hungry around 1 a.m. The roommate offered to pay $10 for the cookies, but Howard wasn't having it, and began fighting with the other woman, police said. The roommate's husband pulled Howard off her so she could escape, but Howard took off after her. Howard grabbed a pair of scissors and threatened the woman. When the woman started to run down some stairs, Howard allegedly dropped the scissors, picked up a board and hit the woman as she ran down the stairs.
Howard caught up to the woman again and knocked her to the ground and started to hit her. When the roommate managed to get outside the house, Howard grabbed a sign and started hitting her again, police said.
Police finally arrived and arrested Howard, charging her with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Kiss Controller turns tongues into joysticks

This is a very interesting new way to play a video game basically  by using your tongue.  I think this is going to change video gaming for sure. An artist by the name of Hye Yeon Nam has created the Kiss Controller  a controller that allows you to play a bowling video game by, well, kissing. In this particular game, one player wears a special head-set with magnetic-field sensors attached to the end of it.  Meanwhile, the other player attaches a magnet to their tongue with Fixodent. The kinect and wii should watch out. While kissing, the person controls the speed and direction of the ball depending on how their moving tongue. The Kiss Controller certainly lends a whole new meaning to the term multiplayer gaming.

Girl with 12 fingers, 14 toes reaches for a record

A mother in Myanmar says her baby girl's 12 fingers and 14 toes have been no disadvantage her grip may even be stronger than normal  and now she's grasping for a Guinness record. A neighbor is helping her mother apply to claim the record hearing that a boy from India currently holds bragging rights for the most digits, with 12 fingers and 13 toes. Polydactylism being born with an extra finger or toe  is fairly unusual, but it is even more rare for someone to have spare functional digits on both hands and feet, as Le does. According to the Guinness World Records website, the record for most fingers and toes for a living person is currently held by two people in India, who have 12 fingers and 13 toes each.

House Votes to Defund 'ObamaCare' as Government Inches Closer to Shutdown

The Republican-led House voted to defund President Obama's health care overhaul on Friday during a sustained burst of floor activity, but with the White House and Senate Democrats vowing to block much of that activity, the government remains on a path to a shutdown if lawmakers can't reach a spending bill compromise in the coming weeks.
The House passed the health care measure, 239-187, as an amendment to a bill that would keep the government lights on through the end of the fiscal year but also impose deep cuts on domestic programs. The bill could come up for a final vote Saturday morning.

Rising wholesale prices spur inflation concerns

Steady improvement in the economy may soon come at a price — faster inflation.
Shoes, clothes, tires, plastics and other products all cost more at the wholesale level last month, putting pressure on businesses to pass the increases along to their customers.
The hikes also give ammunition to critics who fear that the Federal Reserve's bold steps to strengthen the economy have started to feed inflation and need to be reined in.

North Korean military officers abruptly walked out of the first official talks with rival South Korea. In a sign of how troubled the relationship is, Wednesday's meeting was sunk because the two sides disagreed about what should be on the agenda of their next talks — what many had hoped would be the first high-level defense talks in years. In the midst of the back and forth, officers from the North walked out and no date was set for another meeting, a Defense Ministry official from the South said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

Grave Robber Chase Reveals Ancient Holy Land Church

The pursuit of a gang of grave robbers has led to the discovery of an ancient church outside Jerusalem that may contain the burial place of Zechariah, a biblical prophet.
The hill-top church was destroyed by an earthquake some 1,300 years ago and lay partly buried until detectives from Israel's Antiquities Authority, pursuing a gang of antiquity thieves, noticed an elaborate doorpost poking through the earth. The robbers got away -- they were caught a few months later at a site nearby -- but after weeks of digging, archaeologists uncovered the remains of the church. It was about the size of a basketball court and contained fallen marble pillars and a nearly pristine 10-meter-long mosaic floor. A team spends much of their time trying to catch thieves, spending nights lying in ambush or setting up stings for crooked antiquities dealers. The thieves often vandalize or destroy archaeological remains before a unit can catch them.

Kansas church to protest at service slain Florida siblings

A controversial Kansas church says members will picket before the memorial service Wednesday evening for two Florida teenagers allegedly killed by their mother. Julie K. Schenecker, 50, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths Friday of her 16-year-old daughter, Calyx, and her 13-year-old son, Beau. She was denied bail at a court appearance Monday. A search warrant filed Tuesday said Julie Schenecker was unconscious and wearing a bloody robe, and her slain children were covered in blankets when police arrived. Julie Schenecker was awakened and taken from a screened-in pool area to inside the home, where evidence was recovered, according to the warrant filed in Circuit Court in Hillsborough County. The warrant provides new details in the case: Five bullets, along with a Smith & Wesson box and instruction manual, were found in the master bedroom; 15 live rounds and five spent shell casings were in the master bath. Also indicated in the search warrant -- both inside and outside the house -- were cigarette butts, note pads, undisclosed medication and paperwork.  Police later found writings in the house, thought to be from Schenecker, in which she spelled out her intentions in detail."There are definitely indications that she planned this," McElroy said. "(The writing) was devoid of emotion."

Soldier Faces Murder Trail Despite Mental Illness

The Army has decided to put a soldier on trial in the shooting death of an Afghan detainee, even though two Army doctors say the soldier was mentally ill at the time of the slaying and didn't realize his conduct was wrong. If convicted, he could face execution or life in prison. It's rare for a court-martial to proceed after the military's own doctors have said the defendant was mentally ill and unable to tell right from wrong. Lawrence is accused of fatally shooting a suspected Taliban member who was asleep in a jail cell at a U.S. outpost in Afghanistan on Oct. 17. Lawrence had schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder at the time of the shooting. Now he’s just waiting to go to court and see what they have to say and what he’s charged with.                                             http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/02/01/soldier-faces-murder-trial-despite-mental-illness/
